Tamworth Hospital provides a broad range of specialist services to the residents of the New England and Upper Hunter.

Service Area

Tamworth Hospital Paediatric and Adolescent Inpatient Unit provides services to children in the New England and Upper Hunter area. Tamworth Hospital is the major referral centre for the northern sector of Hunter New England Local Health District.
 

Paediatric Services Provided

The Paediatric Unit has 18 beds with over 2600 admissions per year accommodating babies, toddlers, children and adolescents up to age 18 who are still attending school. The unit provides paediatric medical and surgical services.

The typical inpatient caseload consists of paediatric medical and general surgical cases. This includes orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, dental, gastroenterology, endocrinology, oncology and mental health admissions.

Parent and Carer Facilities 

One parent or carer is able to stay with their child 24-hours a day. Where possible, sofa beds are available for carers next to their infants or toddlers. The paediatric unit has two overnight bedrooms attached to the ward, these are used to accommodate a parent or carer of a child.

Ronald McDonald House also offers accommodation for those parents or carers from outlying rural communities.

Shared care is a concept that involves nurses and parents/carers working together and caring for children in hospital. The ward welcomes parents’ involvement in their children’s treatment and care.

Security 

Access to the ward is through a locked, child proof door with a surveillance video link to the staff station.
 

Visiting 

Visiting hours for extended family and friends is between 11am - 1pm and 3pm - 8pm.

Where there is concern about the patient’s condition, visiting by other family members may be restricted, at the discretion of the nurse in charge.
