Volunteer

The wonderful team of volunteers at John Hunter Children's Hospital exist to support patients, families and staff in the hospital setting. Our volunteers are a diverse group of professionals, retirees, university students, mums, dads and grandparents.

Volunteers bring a wealth of skills, talents and experience which can make the hospital experience as pleasant as possible for patients and their families whilst supporting the staff whenever possible. Volunteers enhance service delivery and help our organisation to receive valuable feedback on community issues.

As a volunteer you'll enjoy an important sense of teamwork as you collaborate with hospital staff to make a difference.

Whether you're already volunteering or just starting out, there are a variety of roles to fit individual time schedules. Volunteers can work in many different ways, some directly with patients and others behind the scenes to make a difference.

How to Apply

Volunteering at John Hunter Children's Hospital is a popular way for community members to give their time. The volunteer service receives a high number of applications each month and therefore is unable to process all applications immediately.

Before you decide to apply for a volunteer position, please take the time to really think it through.  The staff and patients depend on volunteers to be committed.

We are unable to offer volunteer or work experience opportunities for young people under 18 years of age.

To be considered as a volunteer you must meet the minimum criteria below:

• Be over 18 years of age
• Have no criminal history of violence, drug offences, sex offences or crimes against children
• Are able to independently understand principles of infection control, privacy, confidentiality and workplace safety
• Obtain your own Working with Children Check (WWCC)
• Understand that Hunter New England Local Health District facilities are smoke-free environments
