The Nexus Inpatient Unit is a 12-bed unit located at John Hunter Children's Hospital. It provides services for children and adolescents who present with mental health disorders that are conducive to inpatient observation and/or treatment.

The Nexus Education Team work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team of health professionals at the Nexus Inpatient Unit and provide specialised educational support for students who are admitted. With the consent of a young person’s family/carer, the Nexus Education Team can work with census schools to support student learning while on the ward and help students with future focused goals. Education staff also communicate with a student’s school to help create and support a return to school plan after an admission to the Nexus Inpatient Unit.

The staff in the Nexus Education Team include an assistant principal, a full time classroom teacher, a part time teacher, two school learning support officers and a school counsellor.
