Hospital School

John Hunter Children's Hospital School is a direct service of the NSW Department of Education and Training, offering programs to inpatients and specified others from years K-12.

Parents can enrol their children if they are currently enrolled at a school and have the approval of the medical team. Enrolments are both short and long term, catering for those with acute and chronic medical conditions.

With long term patients the school liaises with home schools to ensure the continuity of students education programs from their home schools.

The school creates a caring, supportive environment where educational opportunities and continuity are provided for all students. The main priority is to meet the needs of students in the areas of learning and welfare. School culture is inclusive with an emphasis on developing positive relationships between all members of the hospital community.

Students, parents and staff work together to stimulate and support students through quality individual education programs that will enhance learning outcomes, promote psychological wellbeing and assist in the recovery process.

Students other than inpatients may be enrolled in John Hunter Children's Hospital School. Students falling into this category may include siblings of long term inpatients and children of long term adult inpatients.

Educational programs are administered in the schoolroom if the student has medical approval; however should the student be unable to attend they may complete any schoolwork in their beds.

The school endeavours to provide a degree of normality in a possible stressful time for a child and their family.

Attendance may be whole days, or partial days depending on medical advice.
