Rehabilitation Inpatient Service

When your child is in hospital following major injury, illness or medical procedures, they will be cared for by a team from John Hunter Children’s Hospital in partnership with the Paediatric Rehabilitation team.

The teams include medical, nursing and allied health staff, with a focus on enabling children to achieve their highest level of independence, physically, psychologically and socially.

Your child will transition from hospital to community to ensure follow up is provided in a timely and effective way.

Services provided while the child is in hospital include
  • Allied Health therapy input, which may include one or many of the following:  physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, dietetics, social work, psychology, child life therapy, music therapy or art therapy
  • Coordination of care by the Clinical Nurse Consultant
  • Consultation and assessment by the Paediatric Rehabilitation Specialist - some children and young people will only require a medical consult with the Specialist and others may require more comprehensive follow up.

Patients who need ongoing care after discharge from hospital will have regular review and progress meetings with the hospital and rehabilitation teams while they remain in hospital. The purpose of this is to allow for establishing goals for therapy and planning for discharge.
