Family Care Cottage

The Family Care Cottage is a community based unit of The Maitland Hospital providing parenting support to families in the Upper and Lower Hunter.

The Family Care Cottage is a specialist secondary level service providing support to expectant parents and families with babies and young children for complex problems that have been unable to be resolved at the primary service level.

Many of the families referred have multiple issues that impact on their ability to meet the emotional needs of their infant. Clinicians work in partnership with families to enhance family functioning, with emphasis on the parent – infant relationship.

What services are provided?

The service provides centre based appointments, day stay, home visiting and group programs for a range of issues associated with parenting such as complex feeding issues, child behaviour and sleep management, adjustment to parenting, anxiety and depression, and difficulties in the parent-infant relationship.

Do I need a referral and how do I make an appointment?

Referrals are accepted from health care providers and community organisations following a face to face assessment. The Family Care Cottage accepts antenatal referrals and referrals for families with babies and young child 0-3 years where there are issues that impact on parenting.

Self-referrals are not accepted.

Referrals must be completed on the Family Care Cottage Intake Referral Form.

Referrals are discussed by the team at the weekly allocation meeting.  The family is sent a letter by the Family Care Cottage advising them of their acceptance to the service. The assigned clinician contacts the family to discuss the referral and arrange a mutually agreeable appointment time.

Referrals are prioritised depending on presenting issues and age of baby.
